RECYCLE + REINVEST

shaping reinvestment into a Legacy of Justice

Recycle & Reinvest partners with schools, organizations, businesses, and communities to turn environmental challenges into opportunities for education, leadership, and action.

We address neighborhood-level environmental burdens—including illegal dumping, litter, land degradation, urban heat, and transportation-related air pollution—through education, environmental stewardship, and leadership development across Nashville's most impacted communities, such as (37208, 37207, 37206, 37210, 37218), most of Davidson County.

Bring the Earth Day in the Hood Academy to your school, or hire our B. 4. L SOIL SOLDERS or GENERALS to lead environmental education, community cleanups, workshops, film screenings, and environmental justice initiatives.

ACADEMY

The Earth Day in the Hood Academy is a 6-week environmental literacy program designed to help elementary students become confident readers, critical thinkers, and community leaders through culturally responsive learning.

Created by The Nashville Black Literacy Coalition, the curriculum is built around Earth Day in the Hood by Jaffee Judah and features companion texts by Black authors and other authors of color that connect literacy, science, environmental justice, and civic engagement.

The Academy is facilitated by Recycle & Reinvest's B.4.L Generals—trained community leaders who guide students through engaging lessons, hands-on activities, and meaningful conversations that inspire environmental stewardship and civic leadership.

Why It Matters

  • Black-Centered Environmental Literacy that reflects diverse voices and lived experiences.

  • Local to Global Learning connecting Nashville with environmental stories from around the world.

  • Representation That Inspires featuring Black and Indigenous youth and leaders as changemakers.

  • Standards-Aligned for Pre-K–5 with age-appropriate lessons that support literacy, science, and social-emotional learning.

Whether you're a school, library, nonprofit, sponsor, or funder, the Earth Day in the Hood Academy provides a ready-to-implement solution that empowers young people to read, lead, and create healthier communities.

What Students Gain

  • Environmental Justice Literacy – Understand how environmental issues affect communities and discover solutions rooted in equity and action.

  • Community Leadership – Learn how individuals and neighborhoods can work together to create cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities.

  • Hands-On Inspiration – Extend learning beyond the classroom through gardening, recycling, cleanups, tree planting, and other community-based projects.

  • Youth Empowerment – Build confidence, critical thinking, and leadership skills while inspiring students to become lifelong environmental advocates.

The Earth Day in the Hood Academy doesn't just teach students about the environment—it empowers them to improve the communities they call home.

Conscious Choices. Collective Impact.

support the mission

We collaborate with local schools, organizations, and businesses to celebrate and maintain spaces that provide public access to local health and wellness resources. At the heart of our work is Soil Soldiers, our youth leadership program for justice impacted youth in the most heavily policed neighborhoods in Nashville.

Your donation helps us build stronger, more connected communities. Every dollar goes directly toward providing resources, and support for those who need it most.

How You Can Help:

  • $10 provides a meal for a family in need.

  • $25 supplies educational materials for local youth.

  • $50 supports wellness programs for seniors.

No matter the amount, your contribution makes an immediate and lasting impact. Together, we can create positive change.
